Mary seated with her Child

This terracotta sculpture of Mary seated with her Child is without doubt one of the most beautiful sculptures made in the 17th century in the Southern Netherlands.

The work is signed by the Antwerp sculptor Johannes Cardon (1614-1656) and represents the Virgin Mary breastfeeding the Baby Jesus. One can observe the moving contrast between the smooth surfaces of bare skin (the Child’s tiny body, the mother’s breast and slender neck) and the movement of the folds in the dress.
