Camiel Van Breedam exhibitions

9th of September 2020

With support from the King Baudouin Foundation, the Belgian artist Camiel Van Breedam (b. 1936, Boom) is honoured in two exhibitions, at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana and the FeliXart Museum, until March 2021.

Camiel Van Breedam loves books, the arts relating to them and indeed everything about books. They form the common thread across all his work and it is for this reason that the Bibliotheca Wittockiana, the Museum of the Arts of the Book and Bookbinding, holds him so close to its heart. Some fifty of his art works, selected by the artist himself, are exhibited until 21 March 2021 and go in dialogue with some of the exceptional bookbindings of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana. Camiel Van Breedam was given carte blanche to create this fascinating dialogue.

With this exhibition, the King Baudouin Foundation and the Bibliotheca Wittockiana would also like to pay tribute to Michel Wittock, who died earlier this year. Passionate about books and the founder of the Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Michel Wittock had already donated a large part of his collection of books and bookbindings to the King Baudouin Foundation ten years ago, a collection that is known throughout the world. Camiel Van Breedam too contacted the King Baudouin Foundation with a view to preserving his work for the future.

The exhibition in the Bibliotheca Wittockiana is part of a double exhibition featuring the work of Camiel Van Breedam. The FeliXart Museum exhibits all of the ‘white’ abstract works of the artist created from 1956 to 1962, from 10 September 2020 to 21 March 2021. This is a première.

Each of the two exhibitions is accompanied by a catalogue.

Camiel Van Breedam, whose commitment to society is also one of the threads running through his work, will create seven boxes in which the two catalogues can be kept, each with a new collage, also created by him. The boxes will be sold at auction at Sotheby’s, and the proceeds given to a good cause.
