Letter from J.L. Vives to F. van Cranevelt

Jean-Louis Vives
20 December 1520

This letter is an excellent example, in both form and content, of the confidential nature of the correspondence between Jean Louis Vives and Frans van Cranevelt, as well as illustrating some of their concerns.

The letter covers a number of themes:

  • their friendship and mutual appreciation;
  • their circle of friends in Bruges;
  • Cranevelt’s studies of Greek;
  • Vives’ work in the field of dialectics;
  • Vives’ reactions regarding Luther.

As far as the nature of the letter is concerned, its rather light tone is subtly mixed with Latin and Greek.
