The reliquary of the rib of Saint Peter, which is part of the Treasure of Oignies, is the focus of a research project on saints’ relics dating from the first century. Analysis of a microscopic sample extracted from the reliquary should enable the relic to be dated and provide information about its origins. This Oxford University initiative will compare the results with those of other analyses, with the aim of better understanding the trade of holy relics and their place in the society of the Middle Ages.
