François Goffinet, l’Art du Jardin et ses métiers

26th of May 2016

The exhibition François Goffinet, l’Art du Jardin et ses métiers (François Goffinet, the Art and Crafts of the Garden) offers a completely new look at the work of a contemporary landscape architect, steeped in the culture and tradition of the 18th century, a culture that was both classical and yet respectful of nature.

This exceptional exhibition illustrates the on-going dialogue between an internationally recognised landscape architect and the numerous skills that must be orchestrated during the painstaking creative process of garden design, including those of architect, historian, artist, perspectivist, botanist, colourist, sculptor, carpenter, wrought iron craftsman and hydraulic engineer. An impressive collection of working documents – reference works, general and detailed plans, drawings and models, watercolours and sketches, as well as the Green Books that constitute the memoirs of completed works, books of plans, lead pencil drawings and photographs – bears witness to the strong ties that link professionals who are passionate about the great tradition of landscape gardening.

Videos, images and objects cover the entire creative process where the living – plants, but also light and shade – takes pride of place, but without ever neglecting the pleasure rendered by a well thought-out detail, the careful workmanship of numerous craftsmen and the desire to create a harmonious and comfortable space, right down to the smallest detail.
François Goffinet wanted to perpetuate his lifetime’s work by creating a name fund within the King Baudouin Foundation, a fund that would safeguard his drawings, watercolours, plans, projects and documents.
