Archival fund

The archival fund kept at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana is of particular interest to bookbinding historians. The fund comprises not only drawings, maquettes and photographs of bookbindings, but also gilding irons as well as numerous letters from master bookbinders and book artists.

This is how the bookbinding maquettes of Belgian artists such as Henry Van de Velde, Paul Claessens, Hubert Beenkens, Berthe Van Regemonter, Jo Delahaut and Edgar Claes came to be conserved, either partially or completely. The Henry Van de Velde Fund also includes a complete set of gilding irons, engraved in Paris by Béarel, which the famous Belgian architect designed for use in decorating Art Nouveau bookbinding.
