Variations brillantes pour le violon et piano sur un thème de La Muette de Portici

Henry Vieuxtemps and A Gutmann
19th century

Henry Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) began to compose whilst he was still very young, as borne out by this archival fund. The archives contain two of his early and unpublished works, including the composer’s very first opus: Variations brillantes pour violon et piano sur un thème de « La Muette de Portici ».

These works were not included in any of the publications devoted to Vieuxtemps. Even Jean-Théodore Radoux’s reference work Vieuxtemps, sa vie, ses œuvres makes no mention.

Composed by Gutmann and Vieuxtemps, the score comprises seventeen pages, six of which are undoubtedly by Gutmann.
